An electronic mailbox is an electronic postal drop used for sending and receiving electronic mail (e-mail). These mailboxes represent individual or group recipients depending on how the software and permissions are set up. Mailboxes can be used to represent devices such as automatic fax services and for programs where workflow and forms delivery are required. Mailboxes can be found on the Internet, on a LAN-based mail postal system, or on-line services such as Prodigy, CompuServe and America Online.
On the Internet, mail is typically handled by mail servers located at the local service provider. Service providers maintain local mail servers and mail IDs (or mailboxes) for individuals subscribing to the service. Sending mail to an electronic mailbox is as simple as invoking a mail application, addressing the mail, and sending. The most difficult part of an electronic mail system is on the maintenance side.
